Design Solution
The key design decision we made to provide handicapped access to the
building, without adding an unsightly exterior ramp, was to lower the
floor of the entry to meet grade. We installed an elevator in the new
split level entry and redesigned part of the interior staircase design
to provide full access to the three story building. We reused the
original entry door, extended the trim, and added a transom to provide
natural light to the entry.
We redesigned the gymnasium floor, added structural support and a
concrete slab to acoustically isolate the gym from the offices on the
floor below. Within the space, we designed a unique acoustical
treatment of the rear wall, concealed pockets on the side walls into
which heavy draperies could be moved, and direct and indirect lighting
to provide the means to vary the acoustic and lighting quality of the
space to match the requirements for specific uses. |
