Tracy Memorial Hall
in Norwich, Vermont was built with funds from the Works Progress
Administration (WPA) in 1939. It has served as emergency shelter,
school, recreation, and town office space at different times in its
history. It was never substantially renovated, the systems were
failing, and it did not meet handicapped access and current building
codes.
Program
In 1989, the selectmen decided to modernize the 50 year old building
to meet current standards. They needed to expand town offices to
include a fireproof vault room for town records, to add meeting rooms,
and to make it possible to use the gymnasium as a multi-use space for
Town Meeting, special performances, exhibitions, dances, as well as
recreational sports. They also required that the footprint of the
building not be expanded or the exterior appearance substantially
changed. |
