Preservation
Existing ceiling boards, flooring and wainscoting were removed and
reused. Existing granite foundation blocks were removed, split in half
to double their coverage and applied as a veneer to the new concrete
foundations. New energy efficient windows were custom made to match
and replace the existing ones.
Architectural antiques (columns, railings, cabinets, displays) were
found, restored, and integrated into the building to create a lively,
theatrical retail environment. The original stage front and proscenium
arch was restored.
The new life given to this building has preserved its place as a
community landmark for the next century. This project won the AIA
Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture in 1993. |
