2) by infilling a narrow alley with a new fire-rated structure containing dressing rooms and the second egress from the two top floors, and; 3) by raising the whole building 1'-10" to create usable space on a new on grade lower level.

To resolve the relation of the raised building and the grade at the North side, an elevated grass panel with granite steps and entry walk was designed. The granite foundation was extended around the grass to create a visual base for the building. A new entry porch was added. A sidewalk, connecting the lower entrance and rear courtyard with the main entrance was added. The original grade sloped from the edge of the road to the top of the foundation.

An open central space was created to expose the second floor immediately upon entering the building. The large skylight above and the overscaled stairway draw the shopper to the upper level, a sometimes difficult task in retail stores.
