2) by infilling a narrow
alley with a new fire-rated structure containing dressing rooms and
the second egress from the two top floors, and; 3)
by raising the whole building 1'-10" to create usable space on a new
on grade lower level.
To resolve the relation of the raised building and the grade at the
North side, an elevated grass panel with granite steps and entry walk
was designed. The granite foundation was extended around the grass to
create a visual base for the building. A new entry porch was added. A
sidewalk, connecting the lower entrance and rear courtyard with the
main entrance was added. The original grade sloped from the edge of
the road to the top of the foundation.
An open central space was
created to expose the second floor immediately upon entering the
building. The large skylight above and the overscaled stairway draw
the shopper to the upper level, a sometimes difficult task in retail
stores. |
