Grange is an adaptive reuse/ preservation project of a building
built in 1887 for the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and later
became the Grafton Star Grange. The original building contained 3,150
sf of finished space on two floors. In 1990, plans to renovate the
building and adapt it's use into a clothing boutique were begun.
Design Concept
The design concept creates an "old fashioned" retail ambiance,
reminiscent of small department stores of earlier times. The
renovations maintain the original character of the shell while making
it energy efficient and in conformance with current building codes.
Modern lighting and mechanical systems are integrated into the fabric
of the existing Italianate style building.
Design Solution
An additional 2,400 sf of floor space was added to the wood framed
building by: 1) extending the second floor over the stage below;
