The low knee walls on the
second floor of the original cape are carried through to the addition.
They provide the master bedroom suite with space for built in
cabinetry and are balanced with a high central space featuring a
dramatic series of ridge skylights.
We restructured the existing ell to permit a new exercise room over
the dining room where the old kitchen existed. The roof was extended
to form a covered porch which extends to a large open deck. The dining
room provides the link between the addition and the renovated living
room.
The new kitchen is open to an eating area sunspace recessed under the
gable roof of the second floor. An automatic exterior awning shields
the sloped glazing to prevent solar overheating because of the direct
southern exposure.
The kitchen integrates prefabricated wood cabinetry and custom curved
granite countertops. The curved soffit above the countertop conceals
indirect lighting and ductwork; it defines and accents the geometry of
the spaces. |
