Site
The existing Orly Farm house is situated within a rolling landscape
overlooking beautiful Vermont farmland to the south.
Unfortunately, the house (see upper two photos)
was poorly designed, stylistically challenged, and did not take
advantage
of the panoramic views.
Program
The owners wished to enlarge the house significantly and to make it
appropriate for large gatherings and weekend retreats.
A mudroom entry, a large kitchen with eating area, a large dining
room, a master bedroom suite with exercise room, a screened porch,
and a helper’s bedroom were to be added. The existing house contains
the principle living room space and additional bedrooms.
Design Solution
The design challenge was to integrate the new construction with the
existing and to form a balanced, unified architectural composition.
To that end, we aligned the eaves of the addition's roofs with those
of the original cape style building (lower photo). |
